History: The Department of Geography was established in 2011 within the Faculty of Science and Letters at Iğdır University and began admitting students in the 2019-2020 academic year. As of 2023, with the decision made by YÖK, the Geography Master's Program with Thesis has also been launched.

• Program Outputs: The Department of Geography aims to equip students with the following competencies:
• Analyzing natural and human geography: Students gain knowledge to understand and analyze the effects of natural and human factors on a geographic level.
• Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Students acquire the ability to conduct spatial data analysis and produce maps using GIS software and mapping technologies.
• Land use planning: Students develop the ability to create solutions for land use and environmental planning in geographic areas.
• Conducting scientific research: Students are trained to investigate geographical events, prepare scientific reports, and develop solutions.

• Field Studies: Geography students participate in field studies and trips to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life settings.
• Research Infrastructure: The department provides access to various geographic databases and research resources.

Purpose of the Department: The Department of Geography aims to provide students with the ability to comprehend the natural, human, and economic features of Turkey and the world while enhancing their skills in analyzing and synthesizing this information. The department seeks to teach students modern scientific research methods for understanding geographical phenomena. Additionally, it strives to cultivate individuals who work on human-nature interactions, aim to preserve nature’s delicate balance, create suitable living conditions, and develop contemporary solutions to today’s environmental and societal challenges.

Current Status and Future Goals: The Department of Geography began admitting undergraduate students in 2019 and launched the Geography Master's Program with Thesis in 2023. The department provides education in both natural and human geography while equipping students with skills to perform geographical analyses and use modern tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In the future, the department aims to expand and enhance its international collaborations. It also seeks to increase its academic capacity through innovative projects in emerging technologies and geographical research areas.
