Department of Geography of Türkiye

General Information

​

  • History: The Department of Geography was established in 2011 within the Faculty of Science and Letters at Iğdır University and began admitting students in the 2019-2020 academic year. As of 2023, with the decision made by YÖK, the Geography Master's Program with Thesis has also been launched.

  • Program Outputs: The Department of Geography aims to equip students with the following competencies:
    • Analyzing natural and human geography: Students gain knowledge to understand and analyze the effects of natural and human factors on a geographic level.
    • Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Students acquire the ability to conduct spatial data analysis and produce maps using GIS software and mapping technologies.
    • Land use planning: Students develop the ability to create solutions for land use and environmental planning in geographic areas.
    • Conducting scientific research: Students are trained to investigate geographical events, prepare scientific reports, and develop solutions.

    • Type of Education: Full-time (Undergraduate and Graduate)
  • Infrastructure: The Department of Geography offers students an effective and efficient infrastructure throughout their education:
    • Geography Laboratories: Modern laboratories are used for geographic analyses, map production, and land observations.
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Software: Students are trained to conduct spatial analyses and map editing using GIS software.
    • Field Studies: Geography students participate in field studies and trips to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life settings.
    • Research Infrastructure: The department provides access to various geographic databases and research resources.

Course Catalogue

Double Major/Minor Programs

Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications

Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.

Exchange Programs

​It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a designated period. Through these programs, students gain the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and acquire valuable international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi.

Career


Purpose of the Department: The Department of Geography aims to provide students with the ability to comprehend the natural, human, and economic features of Turkey and the world while enhancing their skills in analyzing and synthesizing this information. The department seeks to teach students modern scientific research methods for understanding geographical phenomena. Additionally, it strives to cultivate individuals who work on human-nature interactions, aim to preserve nature’s delicate balance, create suitable living conditions, and develop contemporary solutions to today’s environmental and societal challenges.

Current Status and Future Goals: The Department of Geography began admitting undergraduate students in 2019 and launched the Geography Master's Program with Thesis in 2023. The department provides education in both natural and human geography while equipping students with skills to perform geographical analyses and use modern tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In the future, the department aims to expand and enhance its international collaborations. It also seeks to increase its academic capacity through innovative projects in emerging technologies and geographical research areas.

  • Ministry of National Education: They can work as geography teachers in public schools, as well as in private schools and educational institutions.
  • Municipalities and Public Institutions: They can work in areas such as urban planning, environmental sciences, land use, and transportation planning.
  • Private Sector and Consultancy: They can serve as GIS specialists, map editors, marketing analysts, or environmental consultants.
  • Environmental and Nature Conservation Organizations: They can take on roles such as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Specialist or Water Resources Specialist.
  • Research and Academia: By pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees, they can work as university lecturers or research assistants in academia.
